ANNUAL SHOW.

The telegraphed advice that the tenth annual show of the Hawke's Bay Kennel Club, which was opened at Napier on the 23rd inst-, was one of the best shows ever seen in the colony, cannot be said to have erred on the side of modesty. The number of dogs benched totalled about 146. The only classes which received a respectable number of entries were the fox terriers' and rough-coated collies'. Mr S. Johnson, of Palmerston North,(officiated as judge, with results which in some instances did not satisfy a number of the leading breeders, although others expressed concurrence with, his decisions. How he came to place the Irish terrier Armagh Achiever (owned by VvL J. Harper) between W. Janson’s Lurgan Looney first prize, and Janson and Clarke's Lurgan Lanty third, is puzzling Irish terrier fanciers. The two Lurgans are of similar type, although Lanty loses a few points owing .to his weight, but Achiever is of quite another type. If the cloddier shape of terrier was considered preferable then Achiever should have gone on top, but only a very few points separate the two. Lurgans, for Lanty barely got the verdict over his brotUer at the last Wellington show. Wherever they were placed it is admitted that they are difficult to separate. In bulldogs, the Christchurch dog. King Pluto (owned by Mr W. H. Townend and Mrs C. H. Ensor) captured first jirize in the open class, with the Wellington dog, Arquebusier, second, Mr C. E. Cutts's (Wellington), Sheffield Pylus, third, and the big Sydney-bred Bargemaster (owned by Mr Cutts's) v.h.c., with Mr F. E. Watson's Wharekoki Grab also v.h.c.
