LADY’S LETTER FROM DUNEDIN

(By "Norma.”)

Madam© Carreno created a regular furore in Dunedin with her marvellous playing. In musical circles those recitals will rank among the greatest musical treats ever heard in this city. At the close of the first night’s programme, a great ovation followed from' the audience, and Madame Carreno had to appear over and over again to bow her acknowledgments. The new art gallery is now nearing completion, and rumours are in the air of balls, conversaziones, etc., to be held in the handsome room adjoining the picture gallery. Rumour has it that the bachelors are contemplating a ball on a large scale to be held whenever the room is complete,; and we sincerely hope there is more than a little truth in the statement. . The southern city has added eonsider- , ably to its public buildings-,'shops, etc., during- the last few years. : What With our handsome railway station, law courts, new post office, and .art gallery we can* compare with any other New Zealand city, and now, by the kindness of one of our esteemed citizens, Mr Robert Glendinning, we are soon to be provided with “winter gardens,” which will prove a boon and a beauty to the town. -The old block of buildings in. Princes street, so long known as “Briscoe’s,” has been entirely rebuilt. The firm has done away with the retail shop, its business now being entirely wholesale, and the old building which has been fitted; up with a. wide verandah over some half dozen shops, makes another imposing feature of that routli end of the town. .Above the shops arc handsome offices, and the block, which resembles - the “Stock 'Exchange Buildings,is known as the “Empire Buildings.”” Mr Menzies left a few days back for Christchurch and Well ir "-ton, having spent a fortnight as guest of Mrs George Turnbull. Mrs J. Hay (Temuka) lias come down to spend a week, or two with Mrs and .Miss Sise. Miss Maud Sise is expected from Sydney next week or the following, and will pass through Wellington en route for Dunedin. The Misses- Shand gave a small evening party this week in honour r ? Miss -Rosie Cumings, a Sydney belle, at present visiting Dunedin as guest of Mrs Kerr. Mr John Allen and Mr v Charlie Ritchie leave "Wellington on the Ist August by the Tongariro for London, and proceed to Cambridge, where- they will remain for some years.
