THE NEW TARIFF.
The Mayor of Dunedin has sent the following telegram to tne Commissioner of Customs:—“The proposed increase of duty on electrical machinery will seriously affect the city corporation, which has embarked upon a Jt200,000 hydroelectric scheme. The increased duties will not benefit any manufacturing interests, and are likely to retary the development of this important industry. 1 sincerely hope you will see your way to materially modify the proposals. I consider in the interests of the colony that electric machinery should be subject for preferential protection. . A Press Association message states that m the course of his reply the Hoi- A, Millar says:—“Electrical machinery IS simply being put on the same .basis as steam machinery, with which it .enters into competition, and revenue is required.” A representative meeting of coalmihe owners at Dunedin decided to emphatically protest against any increase in duty m connection. with mining machinery, especially boilers and locomotives, as the industry has already as much as it can carry-
