LADY'S LETTER FROM CHRISTCHURCH.

(By “Joan.”)

It is not often that I have so little to chronicle as this week, which has been absolutely given up to golf and little else. There is no doubt that after a long day on the links one does not feel inclined for further exertion, 80 entertainments have been “off” for the time being. The Men’s Golf Championship meeting has occupied the whole week, and, as usual, the North Island has carried off the chief honours, Mr 8. H. Gollan, of Napier, winning the Championship, as well as the Championship of Canterbury. The Challenge Shield, however, was won by our club, as well as the Bogey match. The runner-up for the Championship was Mr W. Hardman, of the local club.

The week wound up last night with a dinner in honour of the visiting players at the Royal Cafe, which was followed by the prize presentation, which was made by Mrs Denniston, and concluded with a very enjoyable little dance. Mrs Denniston wore a handsome gown of purple brocade, relieved with cream lace; Mrs Wigram was in black crepe de chine, relieved with beautiful lacej Mrs Braithwaite was in black chiffon taffetas and lace; Miss H. Denniston was in black crepe de chine, and her cousin, Miss F. Denniston, wore pale blue taffetas and lace; Mrs Kettle looked well in black taffetas and white stole; Miss Kettle wore white silk; Miss O. Kettle, pale mauve silk; Mrs J. Palmer had a pretty gown of white net over satin and pink roses; Mrs Vernon wore black and white taffetas; Mrs Campbell wore black; Miss Gorrie (Auckland), white chiffon over satin and pink roses; the Misses Burns had pretty gowns of soft red silk; Miss Harley, cream lace; Miss Abraham (Palmerston North) looked well in black tulle over silk; Miss Mendelson (South Canterbury) had a beautiful gown of primrose coloured satin and lace. Also present were Mrs Henry Wood, Mrs W. McLaren, and ■Misses Campbell, M. Williams, E. Reeves, Woodhouse, Murray-Aynsley, Macdonald, Nancarrow, Russell, Moore.

Prins, Symes, Philips, and Messrs Loughnan, Duncan, Moore, Robertson, Wood, Laurence, Peache, Hirley, and Jameson.

The Misses Abraham are the guests of Mrs Denniston, Armagh street. Mrs Stead has gone to pay a round of visits in Wellington and Napier. Miss Woodhouse (Dunedin) is' the guest of Mrs Gower-Burns. We are all looking forward to the event of next week, the wedding of Miss Denniston and Mr Abraham, which takes place on Wednesday at St. Michael’s and All Angels. Mr and Mrs W. Maclaren (South Canterbury) have been spending the week with Mrs Burns. September 15.
