VICTORIA COLLEGE

Tho Victoria College Council met on Aug. 15. Present: fir. Finlay (chaix> man), Sir Robert Stout, Messrs Talbot, Watson, Fleming, C. Wilson, A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., F. P. Wilson, Dr Knight and Hon. A. Pitt. Tho following accounts were passed: Salaries and general <£653 6s 6d; laboratory account, <£77 3s 6d; general account, credit bank balance, .£2055 2s-4d. The Auckland College Council wrote that at the last meeting of the Council a resolution was passed in favour of the professors, lecturers, and officials of the college being entitled to the benefits of the Teachers’ Superannuation Act, and asking for the co-operation of the Wellington, Otago, anil Canterbury College Councils to this end. —Mr Fleming moved that the Victoria Council cordially support the proposal. Sir Robert Stout, in seconding the motion, said it was not as if the money was all coming out of the pockets of the Council, as it would practically come out of the payments by the professors themselves.—Mr Hogg liad no objection to the motion so long as the general taxpayer was not saddled with the expense, for professions in the enjoyment of good salaries ought to be able to purchase annuities for their old age.—Tho motion was agreed to. The City Council asked for payment (£6) of half cost of formation of the footpath at Kelbuipie parade near the College. It was decided to ask the Council whether it was usual to charge all owneis half cost of the formation of footpaths opposite their properties, and to point out that the Council had a special claim, seeing that it was an eda-_ eational institution, and not an institution for private gain. The secretary reported that a valuable microscope had been presented to the College by Mrs Lemon, widow of the late Dr Lemon, accompanied by a number of slides. This was a gift to Dr Lemon by the Government for services rendered by, him in connection with a break in the cables. A vote of thanks was passed to the donor. The Finance Committee reported having accepted a tender for <£loo 11s for the drainage of the flat on the land acquired from the Hospital trustees, in order to prevent the made ground there slipping down into Salamanca road. Professor Easter field having reported that certain students required the course of lectures in elementary physics, the committee sanctioned the appointment of Mr R. E. Rudman, ALA., to deliver such course during the term. Thirteen students had availed themselves of the opportunity thus given, and the committee recommended that before the session of 1907 began arrangements be made for the appointment of a lecturer in elementary physics, so as to meet the wants of students in medicine, music, and candidates for senior civil service examination.—Approved. The Finance Committee was instructed to report on the question of more classroom accommodation, which, it was urged, was becoming a necessity.
