Dr L. Cockayne, of Christchurch, received intimation by the San Francisco mail of his election as Corresponding Fellow to tho Botanical Society of Edinburgh.

On leaving the staff of the “Evening Post” to join that of the “New land Times,” Mr M. C. Keane was presented with a token of esteem by his fellow-workers.

At St. Mary’s Cathedral, Parnell, Auckland, on Thursday last, Miss Ida Thorne George, second daughter of tho Hon S. Thorne George, M.L.C., wan married to Mr Frederick Waller, of that city. It is probable (says the “West Coast Times”) that Mr F. M. B. Fisher, M.H.R., will visit the West Coast to* wards the end of this week for the purpose of attending the Temperance! Convention at Grey mouth. It is understood that under the wjlli of the late Mr John Callender, who died at Wellington on Wednesday, technical education in Dunedin and Wellington will benefit by some thousands of pounds. The deceased gentleman was prominently connected with the firm of Bing, Harris and Co.

A cable message from Sydney states that Dr R. M. Sly, K.C., has been appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court. Dr Stty has for a good many years been a prominent member of the New South Wales Bar. A considerable amount pf his practice was in the Admiralty Court. His brother, Dr J. Sly, is the senior member of the firm of Sly and Russell, prominent solicitors of Sydney. Mr H. L. Harvey, son of Mr H. M. Harvey, of Bundaberg, and a prominent scholar at the Maryborough Grammar School, lias been appointed the Rhodes scholar for Queensland. Mr Walter Rupert Reynell (aged twenty), an undergraduate at the Adelaide University, has been selected as Rhodes scholar for South Australia. Mr Thomas Dunbalin, 8.A., of the Officer College, Hobart, is this year’s Rhodes scholar for Tasmania. On Thursday an oil launch with thp name “Advance,” fitted with a five-horse-power standard engine, was discovered in an abandoned condition at Waihi Point, Queen Charlotte Sound. A launch of similar description was seen to pass Ravenscliffe on, Wednesday during a strong gale. The only documents on hoard are in Italian, and the launch was evidently engaged in the fishing trade - The Auckland secretary of the St., John Ambulance Society (Mr William Rattray) has been informed by the Governor’s private, secretary that his Excellency will be pleased to present to Porter McGinn the medal awarded by the Order of St. John of Jeru-» salem, for his bravery in rescuing an elderly man who was in danger of being run over by an engine at Pukekone. The presentation will be made when his Excellency visits Auckland for the purpose of unveiling the Campu bell statue.
