LONDON MARKETS

The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, j dated London. March 10th : The market for mutton is firmer, and \ there is a better demand. Stocks are

light,especially light weights, which are getting very scarce. The average price of Canterbury mutton to-day is 4£d per lb. North Island brands are quoted at 4£d. Ewes 3d per lb. The average price for River Plate is per lb.

The lamb market is weak. The stocks of Australian lamb are heavy, and are widely distributed amongst agents, who are pushing sales. There is a large supply of second class quality on hand, which affects the market very seriously. The ’ average price of Canterbury lamb is sfd per lb. Brands other than Canterbury, s£d.

Tho beef market is dull. River Plate supplies are heavy. The average price of hindquarters is forequarters (nominal), 2fd.

The butter market is rather unsettled, on account of one large shipment arriving from Australia of very inferior quality, for which some holders are forcing sales. There is a general and active demand for best quality only. Th><'« average price of choice New Zealand butter is 10qs; Australian, 101 s;

Argentine, 104 s; Danish, 115 s per ewt. The cheese market is firm, and there is a good demand for small whites at 625; coloured, 64s per cwt.

Hemp—The market is quiet, but holders are firm, especially for spot lines. Stocks on hand are 542 tons, against 974 tons for corresponding period last year. The average price for g.f.a.q. Wellington, on spot, to-day, is £33 per ton. The average price of “fair” current Manila on spot to-day it £4l IQs.

The cocksfoot seed market is very firm. Tho average price for bright dressed 171 b seed on spot to-day is 57s per cwt.

The wool market looks very strong. There are numbers of buyers at highest rates ruling. The importation of River Plate mutton, lamb, and butter into the Unite*!

Kingdom for the month of February, 1906, totalled 146,719 carcases mutton, 7681 carcases lamb, and 8622 cwt of butter, distributed as follows: —Mutton—London, 40,861; Liverpool, 79,589; Cardiff, 16,369; Glasgow, 6700; Cork, 3200.
