Mrs Maukura Tamahau has offered a section of land at Papawai on Which to erect the Maori carved house at tablelands, which was presented to the Government by the Wairarapa natives in October, 1901. Mr A. Hamilton, curator of the Colonial Museum, accompanied by Mr H. Parata, of Papawai, inspected" the house on Monday, and was very well pleased with it. It will now be taken charge of by the Tourist Department. The work of removing the house, the “Leader” states, will he done by the natives at the expense of the Government. A carved fence, commenced by the late H. T. Mahupuku, will be erected round it. It was always the wish of Mahupuku that the house should be at Papawai, but ho deferred to the wishes of others that it should he at Martinborough. The present chief, H. T. Rangitakiwaho, agrees to the change. The <r Examiner” states that the directors of the “Pahiatua Era” have decided to increase their capital by £7OO. Mr T. M. Byrne, formerly of the “Tuapeka Times,” Otago, will be manager.
