Tlie death is announced hy cablegram from London of Major-General Sir WiLliam Gntacre, 1v.0.8. Hie deceased,, who was in his sixty-fourth year, entered the army in 1862, and saw forty-two years’ service, retiring in 1904, He served with distinction in India for a long period. During the Boer war, in which he, before the advent of Lord Roberts, commanded the central division, he met with a serious reverse at Beddensburg, Orange. River Colony, and was recalled. Prior to that he commanded the British division in Soudan during advance on Khartoum and Oiadunnan, for which lie received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament.
