With reference to the experiments proposed to be made for rabbit extermination by the eminent French scientist, Dr Danysz, to which we recently called attention, the New South Wales Government is populating Broughtonlsland, off Port Stephens, with the unfortunate rodents that will be experimented upon. The Sydney “Telegraph” states that a consignment of live rabbits, about 700 in number, enclosed in specially designed crates, was brought down from Narrabri by train, and transferred to a steamer which is to take them to the island. On reaching their isolated home, the rabbits will be liberated and allowed to roam over the island for some time, in order that they may become acclimatised to their new conditions. Those that cannot stand the change will, of coiTSe, die off, but those that survive will, it is stated, be practically immune from climatic influences and, consequently, better suited for accurate tests of the value of Dr Danysz s method of extermination. The comparative inaccessibility of Broughton Island, which is situated about seven miles from the mainland, renders 1 , in the opinion of export,, part‘c“larly suitable for conducting experiments ot Premier 0 f Victoria (Mr Bent) Jrt? S b lhe underst has been SSK by Victoria. London financiers advise that when the. local loans are issued interest and principal ought to be made payable in the colonies. That is exactly what Victoria has done with regard to the loan just floated, and Victoria has gone further, for one of the Financial Acts passed last session provides that stock may be transferred from London to Melbourne, and made payable, whereas it cannot be transferred from Melbourne to London.
