(From Our Own Correspondent.) Entries for the main events at the Ahaura Axemen* s Carnival closed on Wednesday evening, October 18th, when there were no less than 10 entries for the maiden saw, 17 for the tyro, 26 for the maiden, handicap chop, IS for the champion handicap, anti 18 for the upright chop. The committee decided to extend the time for receiving entries for the maiden and handicap shovelling contests, also for receiving tenders for the refreshment booth. The committee are indefatigable in making all arrangements for the comfort and convenience of visitors, and intend to make the 9th of November a red letter dav in Ahaura. At a public meeting held in Thomas's Clubraom, Blackball, it was decided to hold their annual sports in Irvine's paddock on Monday, 27fh November. An energetic committee was formed to draw up a programme ‘and make all arrangements for the same. The residence of Mr Thomas Doolan, of Slatey Creek, near Ahaura, was destroyed by fire one day last week. Mr and Mrs Doolan were engaged at some distance away, and on returning found their home a blackened beap.
