“WHITE AUSTRALIA”

IMPERIAL UNITY INVOLVED. COMPROMISE NECESSARY. LONDON, October 24. “The Times,” in an article on rthe question of immigration restriction, says:—“A special provision would meet the special case of the importation of blacklegs during a strike, but it is certain that an absolute laissez faire policy as regards coloured people would make Australia the home of a preponderatingly yellow and brown population. The existence of our race demands restriction and regulation, which ought to be as little invidious as possible. “The Times” agrees with Mr Deakin, the Federal Premier, that there is room for a restatement of the case, and adds:—“The growth of Imperial unity must be based on a compromise, and not a verbal subterfuge. The Motherland must realise the. nature of Australia’s problems, and modify her preconceived theories to. suit them. Australia, in the interests of the Empire and her own progress, must learn to separate what is essential to the development of a white race and the maintenance of a standard of living from what is not. essential, and to retain the former.” THE JAPANESE. MILLIONS TO BE ABSORBED IN MANCHURIA. LONDON, October 25. Count Hayashi, Japanese Ambassador in London, in the course of an interview, said Manchuria and Korea would absorb from five to ten millions more people than Japan was at present able to spare. “Australia,” added the Count, “has never been in danger of an influx of Japanese immigrants. Official circles in Japan recognise that the attitude taken up by Australia is the result of labour agitation. But the unofficial opinion, based on conditions which appear on the surface, is that the generality of the people of Japan, who do not go deeply into the matter, believe that their feelings had been intentionally wounded by those responsible for the government of Australia.”
