SHOCKING ACCIDENT.
TRAIN WRECKED IN ESSEX. TEN PERSONS KILLED AND FIFTY INJURED. LONDON, September 2. An express train from Cromer, in Norfolk, to London was wrecked at Witham Junction, near Colchester, in Essex. Six women and four men were killed, and fifty persons injured. It is difficult to account for the accident. Examination of the metals reveals no fault. The train was approaching Witham at full speed when a carriage became derailed—it is believed owing to a fractured axle, or because a sharp curve was being negotiated—and' the train was thus suddenly parted. Four carriages of the rear section of the train mounted the station platform —one turning a somersault—and demolished the porter’s room, killing the porter. The carriages were heaped together by the terrific impact. There were many miraculous escapes, including those ef a party of forty of Dr Barnard©’s children. A gasometer burst, setting, fire to an overturned carriage of the front section, but the sole occupant leaped out safely before the carriage overturned.
