FLOODS IN OTAGO

‘ DUNEDIN, September 2. Owin« to thirty-six hours' continuous rain all the southern portions of the city and an extended area known as the Flat are flooded to a gi-eater depth than at any time for many years. The Carisbi*ook and Caledonian grounds are only partially visible. Tram communication with St. Kilda is also interrupted, and that with St. Clair is diverted. The cause of the interruption is a washout at Hillside road owing to the stormwater channel from Glen bursting. From Central Otago heavy rains are reported Gimmerburn creek is rising, and Wedderburn creek is in flood. There is no immediate prospect of the rain ceasing. September 3. The weather cleared up considerab’y in the early morning, and to-day there xvere only showers of driving mist which did. not last many seconds. Although all the low-lying sections in St. Kilda and South Dunedin were a sheet of water an-d there was an overflow of surface water dx*ainage, the damage is trifling. On the railway numerous email slips and washouts were caused by pepeti’ating rain, but none of these was serious. The rivers and creeks were running bank high, but as the weather was clearing no danger was anticipated. The misty weather is interfering with shipping, and several steamers are at the heads waiting for clear weather.
