With a silken Stars and Stripe*- flag in his pocket, Lieutenant Peary, of the United States navy, left New York on July 14th last with an expedition better equipped, it is claimed, than any. previous one, for another attempt to reach the North Pole. says that he feels quite confident of success, and. will fly his little flag at the North Pole within one year. A few days before the date of departure it became known through the press that the explorer wanted another £IO,OOO to complete his arrangements. Very soon thereafter it was announced that £14,000 had been received, with a promise from a New York entertainment company to- present £2500 for division amongst the crew if they return successful. One thing lacking to complete the personnel of Lieutenant Peary’s expedition was a surgeon, for whom search was nu\de early in July through the medium of the newspapers. The advertisement says : “ Salary, £2O monthly; no chance of spending money ; eighteen months’ trip ; free board and lodging; chance of £SOOO bonus; opportunity to see hitherto unknown lands and reach the Pole.’’ There can hardly be any doubt that this typical American advertisement would result in securing a good man
