At its fortnightly meeting last week the executive of the State Schools Defence League passed the following resolution :—That this executive notes with great satisfaction that a public meeting in Dunedin, which was presided over by Bishop Nevill, and addressed by Dean Fitchett, has recognised that it is the duty of the Church to make the fullest possible use of the facilities for voluntary religious instruction which the present law allows; and respectfully suggests to the leaders of the Biible-in-schools movement in Wellington that it is a farce to denounce the “hard, narrow, bigoted secularism” of the present system, while they themselves deliberately refuse to apply the cure which has for years been found effective in Nelson, and is now being advocated by leading churchmen jn Dunedin.
The Papanui, which arrived last week from London hy way of Auckland and Napier, brought two Hereford bulls for Mr James Stuckey, of Te Rangitumau. One of these was bred by Mr Edwards, of Court House, Pembridge, Herefordshire. It is eighteen months old, and has won a prize every time it has been in the show-ring. The other, which is only six months old, and has never been shown, was bred by Mr A. P. Turner, of The Leem, Pembridge.
