LADY’S LETTER FROM GREYMOUTH.

(By “Sylva.”) The first skating carnival for this season was held at the Rink,Cobden, on Friday night. There were a great many present, about thirty couples . being in fancy costumes. The effect produced was very pleasing. The prizes were awarded as follows:—Best ladies' fancy costume, Miss Campbell 1, Mss Wilson 2. Ladies' race, Miss May Skeats 1. Best lady skater, Miss Lynch (Hokitika) and Miss Wilson (Greymouth) a dead heat. Best gent's fancy costume, L. Lord 1, Mr TJddstrom 2. Beet skaters (lady and gentleman), Miaß Skeats and Mr Rohloff. Boys' race, Master Sampson. Among those present in fancy costumes were: .Mies L. AlcDonnell, “Cr cketer”; Lord, “Jester”; Uddstrom, “Realms of Frost”; Hall, “Jack Tar”; Ross, “Clown”; Sampson, “Gung Lee.” Mr Stark acted as master of oeremories, and filled the position admirably. At the conclusion he presented the prizes to the winners. Excellent music was rendered throughout the evening by Alisscs Ashton and. Goodal and was much appreciated. The news of the death of Mr Andrew Mathesom will be received throughout the Coast with sincere regret. About two months ago Mr Matheson caught a severe cold, which developed into bronchitis in a severe form. -. It was at first thought that he would be able to throw off the attack, but as the days went by it was seen that he would have a hard struggle. At times there were hopes of his recovery, hut the improvement was only temporary. Yesterday morning a change for the worse set in and it was seen the end was near, deceased passing away at 7.30 last evening. Mr Matheson was Mayor of Greymouth ©even times, and a councillor for nearly twenty years, besides being in nearly every other prominent position in the town. He was 68 years of age, and leaves a ©on and three daughters, who will have the sympathy of the whole community in their sad loss. Aug. 19, 1905.
