The friends in Christchurch of Lieutenant Haly Garcia have received newß of his death by drowning in the Soiende river, Cashmere, India (says a Press Association telegram). Lieutenant Garcia was the eldest son of Captain Garcia, for many years a resident of Christchurch, but now in England, Born in Christchurch city and educated at Christ College and the Boys’ High School, young Garcia joined the Imperial Yeomanry and served m South Africa, where he was transferred to the Second New Zealand Contingent, in which he got his commission. After the war he was appointed to a lieutenancy in the First Battalion Durham Light Infantry, and was serving with that regiment in India at the time of his death He was a keen athlete. In 1897 he won the half-mile amateur championship of New Zealand. The "Wellington office of the Union Company wa<= advised through the head office on Thursday of the death at Sydney of Mr H. rle V. Hilbert, passenger agent in the Sydney office for the Canadian and Australian line of steamers. Mr Gilbert was very well known in Wellington, and his death w'll be deplored by a large number of people in this city. Many years ago he- occupied a clerical position in the now-defunct drapery firm of Wilson and Richardson, whose premises occupied the she on Limbton quay now covei-ed by the Dresden Piano Company’s warehouse. In 1889 he entered the service of the Union Company in Wellington, and re>mained in the city until October. 1900. Pie was then transferred to Sydney, where he had resided since.
