Two-thirds of the gold now in use in the world was discovered dnring the last fifty years. The Intelligence Department which has. been established by the Government of New South Wales has been placed under Mr H. C. L. Anderson, M.A. the Government librarian, who will be assisted by an advisory board consisting of the heads of departments. The function of the department is to collect and disseminate as widely as possible all information concerning the position and resources of the State. A rather amusing incident occurred in the .Insolvency Court at Melbourne recently. A witness declined to give the address of a lady who had left Victoria, on the ground that he had received it in confidence. A writ of attachment was issued against him, but this was set aside by the Full Court on a technical point. But the Full Court expressed the view that the question ought to be answered, so when the ease came on again the witness proceeded to answer the important question. He said the lady had left the colony eight months ago, and the last address she mentioned was Post Office, Auckland, New Zealand; but he did not know on what particular date she was there, or where she had gone. After all this trouble, the Court had to try to look pleasant.
