LAWN TENNIS

TOURNAMENT AT MASTERTON. (By Our Special Reporter.) MASTERTON, January 21. Good progress was made to-day in the Masterton tennis tournament, and it is expected that all contests will be concluded on Monday afternoon. The weather was fine this morning, but during the afternoon a cold wind sprang up, and a little rain fell. There was a good attendance of spectators. The courts are new, and consequently somewhat rough. Cox (ex-champion of the colony) showed his usual coolness and command over the ball, but the result of getting little practice with first-class players is apparent, if he reaches the final of the Championship Singles his contest against Parker should be a good one. Parker’s play has been greatly of tlie character of an exhibition for he lias not been extended. Miss Powdrell is in a similar position. She is a new player to Masterton. She will meet Miss Payton, a local lady, in the semi-final of the Championship. Cox and Miss Payton played well in the Mixed Doubles. Their brilliant combined play at the net told its tale in the game against Lvcett and Miss W illiams. Miss Payton played at the net almost as much as her partner. Lycett was careless, and his carelessness was taken full advantage of by Cox, who played liis volleys with great accuracy. Bunting has shown good form in the Doubles. One of the best games of the day was the Mixed Doubles—Greer and Mbs Roberts v. Redward and Miss Robinson. The latter pair led off 6—o. then Greer began smashing severely. His partner fond her length, and togtlier they carried off seven games in succession. But the effort did not last, and Redward and Miss Robinson won. 9—7.
