SPORTING

WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING. SECOND DAY. Perfect weather was experienced on Monday for the concluding day of the Wellington Rac.ng Club's summer meeting at the Hutt Park racecourse. Tire attendance was very large, and probably constituted a record. The Hons the Premier and J. Carroll were again present. Some good sport was witnessed, and both from a racing and financial point of view, the meeting was one of the most successful ever held by the club.

Li the January Handicap, Sir George Clifford’s Golden Vein, who was well treated in a weak field, scored rather easily. The winner was favourite, and was ridden by Hewitt. The same horseman was responsible for the success of another bearer of the “blue and gold chequers” in the next race, the Fitzherbert Handicap, in which Glenowlet put down the Porfrua filly Marguerite without being called upon for a final effort.

The Racing Club Handicap was a fast run race, and produced a close finish between two of the candidates. The Carterton-owned mare Jeanne d’Aro held a prominent position throughout, and won all out by half a length from Convoy, in 2min 7sec. This time equals the record put up by Gladsome in the same race last year, and is only one second outside the Australasian record put up by Hova at Flemington. She was well ridden by F. Jones, who rode Gladsome last year. Another coincidence about the race is that Con\oy again filled second place. The Vanguard gelding has had the bad luck to act as runner up in several important races this season, and the change of ownership does not seem to bring about a change of luck. When Convoy appeared to make his run two furlongs from home, he was going so strong that he looked like beating Jeanne d’Arc. The latter was ridden with great judgment by F. Jones, who got every effort out of his mount. Jeanne d’Arc is a castoff of the Hon J. D. Ormond’s, and was bred at that gentleman’s Karamu stud. She ran prominently this season at the Woodvilie, Manawatu, Wairarapa, and Pa3iiat.ua meetings, and has proved a most consistent performer. She is trained by her owner. Quarryman was very sore. He went very short in his preliminary, and Hewitt pulled him up to see whether anything was amiss with him. Considering the solid nature of the going, he ran a good race. Achilles ran a better race than in the Cup on Saturday, finishing fourth. Melodeon did not run up to his first day’s form, and was one of the last to finish. The hard going appeared to affect him. The Poneke Hack Handicap was robbed of some interest through. Lyrist (who was favourite) and Spoil losing their riders. The Auckland-owned Le Beau (ridden by Cotton) finished in a more resolute manner than on th© previous day, and scored comfortably from Waitoa.

The withdrawal of Ballarat, Chivalry, and Ailsa from the Metropolitan Handicap reduced the field to five, which meant only one dividend. Petrovna was made a level-money favourite, and ran a great race, but failed to give’ So>lutiosn a big concession in weight. With a feather-weight up, the latter won easily in th© fast time of lmin 14 2-ssec. The Hutt-trained Wind, who had run last in the January Handicap earlier in the day, accounted for a field of se-cond-raters in the Disposal Stakes. He was sold to Mr J. Hogg, and will probably join Defoe and Levant at C. Pritchard’s stable. Mr Stead started both Golden Lily and Munjeet in the Wellington Stakes. The Yaldhurst pair carried £1202 of the £2136 invested on the race. Neither was ever dangerous, although Munjeet made an effort to get up two furlongs from home. The Hon J. D. Ormond nearly brought about a surprise with Sir Tristram, a homebred colt by Sir Lancelot, from Thame. He was only beaten a head by Solution, who carried 71. b extra for a win earlier in the day. To get home the Soult mare had to

put up record time for the race. The success of the colours of Mr R. W. Paterson, the local bookmaker-owner, was very popular. He may now alter his previously-expressed intention of retiring from the ranks of local owners. Solution was turned out in great buckle by the veteran trainer Harry Goodman. Another old-timer in R. Derrett, who scored his first win at the Hutt twenty-five years ago, was also associated with the win. Horse and rider received an ovation on returning to the paddock. Backers went for a recovery on Master Alix in the Pencarrow Hack Handicap, on whom A. Piper, brother of the horse’s trainer, was substituted for Hewitt. He again cleared out from the field, and came in by himself in lm:n 15 3-ssec —a great performance for a three-year-olcl with 9.12 on his back. Speculation on the totalisator during the afternoon was very heavy. The money was handled by Mr Joseph Ames’s staff without a hitch of any kind. The investments for the day, including the double, was £17,401, making £32,602 for the meeting. This is £9308 more than last year, and a record for the club. The previous best was £29,743, in 1900. The sum of £709 was invested on the double on the Racing Club and Metropolitan Handicaps. The Jeanne d’ArcSolution combination was backed eighteen times, and paid £35 9s. The other horses in the Telegraph Handicap were backed with the winner of the big race as follows:—Petrovna 118 times, Red Gauntlet 4, Shrapnel Shell 4, Good Intent 4. Petrovna would have paid £5 &s. Three jockeys were injured during the afternoon. E. Cotton, who fell off Noneen, received a cut under one of his eyes. Langstone, whose mount came to grief in the Poneke Hack Handicap, suffered a fractured collarbone. Gallagher was severely bruised about the shoulder when Lyrist came down in the same race. The meeting passed off without protest or unpleasantness of any kind, and was capably managed by Mr A. E. Whyte. The club patrons were well satisfied with Mr King’s catering. Jupp’s Band put on a holiday programme for the occasion. Following are particulars of the racing :—• January Handicap, of 110 sovs; second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stake. Cotton), 270 Wind 6.9 and 81b over (G. Price). Noneen got away with her rider, and bolted a mile before the start. Good Intent got the best, and Wind the worst of the start. After going about two furlongs, Cotton fell off Noneen. Good Intent -showed the way along the back, where Golden Vein and Wind were at the head of the others. At the halfmile post, Golden Vein and Gold Crown closed up to the leader. Two furlongs from home, Golden Vein took charge, and was not afterwards headed, winning comfortably by a length and a half from Gold Crown, who caught Good Intent inside the distance, and beat her by the same margin. Brighton was fourth, and Wind last. Time, lmin 42 l-ssec. Dividends, £2 4s and 17s. Fitzheribert Handicap, of 120 sovs; second horse to receive 20 sovs from the stake. For two-year-olds. The latter ran into second place at the bend. ‘At the distance, she was nearly on level terms with Glen owlet, the riders of Loth horses working hard with hands and heels. About fifty yards from the post, Marguerite was being ridden, but Hewitt had only to keep Glen owlet going to win easily by half a length. Arc Light four lengths away. Jeanne d’Arc held a slight advantage passing the stand, where Red Gauntlet, Joe Chamberlain, and Quarry man comprised the leading division. The order was practically the same to the seven furlongs-post, where Tercelet moved up. Along the back, Convoy and Achilles made a forward move, and at the half-mile post were running fourth and fifth. At tho bend, Red Gauntlet dropped back beaten. Nearing the twofurlong post, Convoy headed Quarryman, and went in pursuit of Jeanne d’Arc. At the distance, the latter was being ridden to keep in front, and after a set-to, won by half a length. Quarryman was about four lengths away, third. Achilles was fourth. Tercelet fifth, and Red Gauntlet sixth. It, is generally conceded that the Foxtail Racing Club’s course is one of the most picturesque on the coast, and today, favoured by excellent weather, it maintained its reputation. The gailydecked throng was thoroughly representative of the surrounding districts, and not a few familiar faces from Wellington were to ho seen. The specials from Feilding and Palmerston brought down a larger number of visitors than usual, the good acceptances, the summer weather, and the prospect of a pleasant outing no doubt being the main causes of the large attendance. The racing was of an interesting nature throughout. Air McWilliams’s liuH-trained man' Kudu outclassed her company in the Flying Hack Handicap. She was never extended, and won without. spur or whip. L, Hill rode Mr Hopi Kori’s Cassiopeia tea victory in the Ala idem Hack

Hurdles, in which the jumping was by no means praiseworthy. Mr G. F. Moore’s Sammy, with lOst up, was the cleanest of the lot over his fences, hut got a poor start. Mr F. Preston’s St. Joe was made a strong favourite for the F-oxton Cup, but the popular fancy was rudely upset by Mr C. Pen fold’s gelding Rapids, who won as he liked by several lengths. The favourite was never prominent. The Stewards’ Hack Handicap fell to a Wairarapa-trained horse, Mr C. F, Valla nee’s Variation winning a well-contested race by a length from Bonheur. The First Hack Hurdle Handicap provided a good field. The favourite was Mr P. Neagle’s Anadeja. Peruvian won easily. A good finish was witnessed in tho Maiden Hack R a 00, tl lerebein g 1 i 111 eto choose be twee a Fair Wind (owned by Mr T. S. Bristol, cf Wanganui), Hinupai, and Mrs Medline's Trephine, who finished in that order. A few more strides, and the positions might have been reversed. Black Reynard led from barrier to box in the Summer Handicap, but A u rat us made a bold bid. The Welter Handicap was the surprise of the day, the Romany winning a well-contested race from ivuroki, a strong favourite. The lucky investors received £2B for every £1 invested. It is worthy of note that it is just fifty years ago to-day since Mr Donald Fraser won his first race at Foxton. Though the present Foxton Racing Club was not then in existence, meetings were annually held. The course was Maoriowned, and it was not till 1893 that the preset club became the lessee. The sum of £7768 passed through the totalisator to-day, an increase of £503 on the first day’s betting last year.
