WAIRARAPA A. AND P. SOCIETY

The Wairarapa Agricultural and Pastoral Association met on Friday. A letter was read from the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society relative to the Government's action in stopping the work of erection of the sterilising works at Auckland and the Bluff, and enclosed a resolution regretting that the Government had stopped the construe cion of sterilising works, and urging th© necessity of such works. Mr Tally (president) remarked there was great agitation n the South about the matter. Sir Joseph Ward had stated that sterilising works were not necessary, because the work was already done when the manure came to New Zealand. Mr Tally said anthrax should never have broken out here, and considered sterilising works very necessary. He moved that the Wairarapa Society strongly supports the Hawke’s Bay Association in the matter, and will help in any way to assist .n getting the works. This was carried unanimously. The treasurer’s statement showed a debit of £283 18s 2d. Against this donations and subscriptions for last year and the current year amount to £2Ol 9s 6d. In view of £6OO spent in permanent improvem nts, the committee considered the position very satisfactory. A committee was appointed to canvass for unpaid subscriptions. It was also decided to obtain an overdraft ol £509 at the Bank of New Zealand, takni" as security the deeds of tli© society’s grounds (14V acres), and that the president-, vice-president, and the treasurer signs all necessary documents.

The caterpillar nest was brought forward by Mr J. Wall, who stated these pests were getting beyond birds, who now failed to keen them down. He thought the matter should be broughtbefore the Government. This evoked considerable- discussion, hut nc action was taken.
