The position caused great amusement and excitement amongst the players at the recent Oaraaru Congress, where the cry of "I've got it” could be heard repeatedly, but not until a good many lines of play were forsaken was the correct line discovered. NOTES. The secretary of the New Zealand Association (Mr J. A. Connell) has received a letter from a prominent member of the Melbourne Chess Club asking if it would be possible for the New Zealand Association to arrange, in conjunction with the Australian colonies, for the visit of a well known English chess player for a twenty weeks’ tour of the colonies, this colony’s portion of the expenses to be about <£so or <£6o. The matter was discussed at a meeting after the conclusion of the recent congress at Oainaru, and it was considered that there would be no difficulty in raising the sum required. Should the tour be arranged an itinerary will be drawn up for the colony, and visits will be made to centres who subscribe the necessary apportionment of the sum required. The Oainaru Chess Congress, about which so much has been said and written regarding the splendid management, all of which I gladly endorse, more especially as it was the first time that Oainaru has undertaken so great a, task, terminated with a concert presided over by Dr Garland, and the following contributed to the programme of amusement which was most enjoyable:—Miss Lari (piano solo), Mrs Mowbray (song), Mrs Cleland (song), Mrs Gould and Mr Cain (vocal duet), Mr Pleasants (song), with recitations by Messrs Gifford, Miles, Kelling, and Barnes.
