RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

PAIIIATTJA RACES. (From '“'Advance.”) PAHIATUA, January 11. For the opening clay of the Pahiatua Racing Club’s annual metting the weather was threatening, but fine. Tlie attendance was large. The Hon C. H. Mills and Mrs Mills were prseent. Good racing was witnessed. The sum of .£6596 was passed through the totalisator, an increase of £436 compared with tlie first day last year. The Alastcrton-owned Ilinerewa scored somewhat easily in the Flying from Sardonyx, who looks fit. The Napierowned Sleepwell made a successful debut in the hurdles. Passing -the stand she was lying last, but smothered Athol Ala id and Moeraki for pace at the finish. Gipsy Jack was brought up to the meeting, but was found to be ineligible. Victor.a Park looked the best of the Trial Hack Plate lot, but was beaten somewhat easily by Electric Gun, a stable mate of Joe Chamberlain. Narcotic Avas pulled out of the Cup. Roseal, looking big and bright, was a good favourite. He ran well for nearly a mile, and would take beating if started in a short race to-morrow. After Roseal had gone to the post a Avire Avas received from the horse’s owners at Greymoutli to scratch him. T. Wilson will probably ride him fo-morroAV. Mystification and Hydrant A\ r ere in front from the jump, the former only being shaken off at the distance, and finishing close. Hydrant only secured the verdict by the narrowest margin from Jeanne d’Arc Avith Plaidie, who put in a good run, close up. Hydrant, Avho ran consistently at ManaAvatu and Bulls, is trained by F. Tilley, at Fordell. He is oAvned by an ex-Welling-ton sport iioav in business at Eketahuna. The OAvner had a good Avin. Douche (Hydrant’s sister) finished last. She is very sore and Avill not race to-morrow; neither Avill Jeanne d’Arc, Avho, on to-day’s form has a chance in the Wellington Cup. The Seer slipped the field at the start of the Telegraph. Stake®, but had nothing to spare at the finish. Miss Lancelot close up to the other pair. She can gallop fast, and should win the Scurry to-mor-rOAv Avith. a good horseman and the best of the weight®. Victoria Park settled Hamua easily in the Welter Hack. Jenkin® made a good finish of it. CatspaAv (the favourite for the RailAvay) got out in front with Wind, but Avas beaten at the five furlongs. Platypus came out at the distance, and scored in first-class style. Bounce came Avith a great rattle, and got his head in front of Wind in the last stride. The latter was paying a nice price. Polyanthus had no difficulty in beating a poor field in the Ivonini Hack Handicap. Mr C. Chevannes, making a first appearance at the meeting, \vas fairly successful with SayAvell’s starting machine. SECOND DAY, PAHIATUA, January 12. For the concluding day of the Pahiatua Racing Club’s meeting splendid tveather was experienced. The attendance was large. The finishes in several events were close and exciting. The sum of £6843 Avas passed through the totalisator, making £13,439 for the meeting. This is £lOll more than last year. Hinerewa scored her second Avin at the meeting in the Newmarket Handicap, but had to be ridden out to get in front of Royal Flush, who was in front from the rise of the barrier. GoldAvai aauis last throughout. Weary Bill (a brothei* to Australia) carried the field along in the Hurdles until Talune took charge, lhe latter was under punishment inside the distance, and there Morpeth threAV out a strong challenge. Royal Blue jumped Avell, but lost ground at the fences and finished last. SleepAvell got into one of the hurdles and cut herself badly. The Wellington sport, Avho OAvns Talune, is reported to have had a good Avin. The Carterton owned Noneen Avon the Racing Club Handicap from end to end. Sunfish and Hydrant Avere ahead of the others at half-way. Mystification and Plaidie joined in a good finish, the four horses crossing the line together. Narcotic (favourite) was the last to begin, and never improAed his position. Hamua (with. W. Price in saddle) ran better in the Mangahoa Welter than on the previous day. At the distance the leaders were all on even terms, but iu the run to the post Noneen came again and landed the stake by a long neck. Mystification the same distance away.
