In recent years thousands of Poles have found their way to Scotland, and have obtained employment, chiefly in the mines and ironworks of Lanarkshire. Large colonies of those emigrants are to be found in Hamilton, Motherwell, Oarfin, Bellshill, and district, many of the male portion having fled from their country in preference to undergoing compulsory service in the Russian army. So long as the Muscovite Government had no immediate need of these Polish subjects, they seemed to have been indifferent to their departure from the country, but Avith a decimating war on hand Avitli Japan they are beginning to exercise some concern about the fugitives. A number of them have recently been traced and served Avith summonses to return to Russia for the service in the army which they had evaded. But loyalty to Russia does not seem to be pronounced amongst the Poles, and very feAA\ if any, nave obeyed the summons. Instead, many have emigrated to America and other countries in order to elude their Russian masters, and others who are liable to be called back are not to be found long in one locality. Dread of discovery is possessing many Poles in Lanarkshire. Mr T. H. Davey, who lias commenced business as a land and estate agent in Christchurch, has been appointed a sub-agent for ihe State F:ro Insurance Department. The clearances of the London Bankers’ Clearing-house in 1904 amounted to £10,564,000,000. This is the largest amount yet recorded. The aggregate in 1903 was £10,119,825,000. and in 1902 £10,028,742,000 —these being the largest figures to those dates.
