SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Senior Championship matches commenced on the 7th inst., were continued on the Athletic Park and the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. ODD BOYS v. PHOENIX. This match provided an exciting finish and the Phoenix team won a few minutes after a quarter to seven o’clock by 12 runs. On the previous Saturday’s play Phoefiix had put on 159 in its first innings, and Old Boys had lost 9 wickets for 127, Continuing that innings they finished for 140. The second innings of the Phoenicians produced 133, Naughton, Houston, and Wright being the double figure scorers. Without them things would have been stale indeed. This left Old Boys 153 runs to get to win. Half their wickets went for 49 runs, and seven were down for 79. A stand was made there, and the eighth wicket fell at 108. The ninth fell two runs later, but the last wicket was held up stubbornly. At a quarter to 7 it was agreed to go on and finish the game, and three minutes later Shand bowled Cleland with a good length ball. Details of the scoring are: PHOENIX.—Second innings. MIDLAND v. WELLINGTON. The result of the ohief senior match was rather a surprise. On the first innings Wellington had a lead of 45 runs, and it seemed as if they stood a good chance of defeating the seniors. Midland opened none too well either, and soon after play commenced on Saturday there were three wickets down for 15. But William? and Quee both came off, and punished the bowling right and left, knocking up 82 between them. The Midland innings amounted to 122, leaving Wellington 78 to make. Misfortune marred what was apparently a good position. With the score at 10 Richardson was given out when he was not out. Gore was the only man to do any good, and he put up 13. The innings only realised 39, and Midland won by 38 runs. Following are the scores: — MIDLAND—Second Innings. Davis, b Luckie ... ... ... ... 4 Mitchell, b Luckie ... ... ... 1 C.
