RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

RANGITIKEI MEETING

PALMERSTON, January 3

Splendid weather prevailed to-day at Bulls, where the second day’s racing of tho Rangitikei Racing Club’s summer meeting attracted a large attendance. The sport proved most enjoyable, surprises being the order of the day and big dividends in evidence. The only favourite that carried his colours to victory was the handsome brown mare Armistice, owned by Mr G. F. Moore. Having justified the confidence imposed upon her by a large number of backers in the Cup yesterday, she went out a very warm favourite for the Greatford Stakes to-day, and won a well-contested race by a length and a half. The chief surprise of the day was the victory of Mr J. Moran’s chestnut more Lauree (late Louie) by Louis d’Or —Opawa mare. She paid a dividend of £22 Bs. A little less surprising were the successes _ of Shrapnel in the Clifton Handicap and Iseult in the Telegraph Hack Raoe. Protests on the ground of alleged inconsistent running were lodged in both cases, but were dismissed. Dalkey, with J. Conquest up, won a good race in the Ivilleymoon Hack —a seven-fur-long flutter, the investors receiving £l4 10s for every £1 invested. The sum of £6981 passed through the totalisator today, making the total for the meeting £16,808 —an increase of £2934 on last year’s amount. Results:—

Half-way up Iseult took charge, followed by Fair Jess and Gyrene. Passing the box the order remained unchanged, the brown filly winning by half a length. Time, lmin 16 4-ssec. Dividends, £6 7s and £1 18s. Olifton Handicap, of 70 sovs; seven furlongs.—7B Mr S. L. Parsons’s Shrapnel, by The Workman —Element, 8 (including 31b over) (W. Raynor), 1; 161 Mr S. ning out of the straight the two leaders drew away and increased their lead. Rounding the bend Jeanne d’Albret took up the running. At the far turn the field drew together again, but entering the straight Jeanne d’Albret, Arolia and Anadeja were by themselves, Pukana and Durban hopelessly beaten. Entering the straight Armistice shot out, with Tirole and Hydrant in attendance. In response to the whip, Seagull made a great run from the outside, hut the Mahaki mare proved victorious in a splendid race by a length and a half. Hydrant was a length away from Seagull. The summer meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club was concluded at Tauherenikau on the 3rd in weather that was a slight improvement on the miserable conditions of the first day. Fortunately, rain held off hut tlie . atmosphere was cold and bleak, and a strong wind blew from the south all day. Taking everything into consideration, therefore, the club has reason to congratulate itself on the success of the meeting. The attendance on both days, despite the weather, exceeded by a considerable number that of the previous year. The racing throughout was good and the arrangements excellent.

Aill six acceptors for the Tauanui Hack Hux-dlo Handicap faced the starter. The favourite, Athol Maid.

failed to get within about half a dozen lengths of the winner, Bissa, who ran a good race. Maui, who was best fancied for the Tawaha Handicap, had to give place to Rungarawa (winner of the Pukio Hack Handicap on the first day) and Sardonyx (third in the same race), who were first and second respectively. Tho Mahaki gelding would probably have won if he had started with the rest. Sun fish was the only scratching in the Racing Club Handicap. Waitarere, who fell the previous day in the Cup, started favourite for the race, but at no stage seemed to threaten Jeanne d’Arc, who bested Noneen. Douche was also well supported for this event, but could not get up at the finish. Curenagh, ridden by Mr J. Haxton, had a rather easy victory in the Wharepapa Hack Handicap. The favourite, Coxswain, won cleverly in the Ruamahunga Hack Handicap. Sagacious, who was also well backed in this event, came to grief at the home turn. She broke a bone in the near hind leg. and was afterwards disposed of for £l2 to Mr J. Orr. Only four started in tho Russell Handicap, which was won by Sunfisli after a hot finish with Shrapnel Shell. There were no scratchings in. tho Pirinoa Hack Handicap, which Variation won after he had expended his last effort. Clem, the second horse, who had only twenty-nine supporters, paid £6 odd. The Rnwiri Handicap, the last event on the programme, produced the most exciting finish of the day. Rose Petal winning with very little to spare.

The totalisator investments amounted to £5864, against £7559 for the second day last year, making £14,132 for the meeting, against £14,974 last year. Results :

A close gallop along the "willows saw Rungarawa and Sardonyx leading at the entrance to the straight. The handicapper, Mr Ulic Shannon, came in for a lot of praise for the excellence of his adjustments. The sum of £4668 was invested on the totalisators, making £10,191 for the two days—an increase of £982 on last year’s total. A notable achievement was the riding of J.
