Mr Bendix Hallenstein, tli-e wellknown Dunedin merchant, senior partner in Hallenstein Bros, (of the New Zealand Clothing Factory), and chairiman of directors of the D.1.C., died on Friday in Dunedin. Mr Hallenstein came to the colonies in the early fifties, and lived for some years in Victoria, where he was in business at Gainsforth. When he came to New Zealand, in the days of the gold rush, he first settled in Invercargill as a storekeeper; then he went to Queenstown, and established a business there, with branches at Arrow and Cromwell. Later on, he removed to Dunedin. There he founded tlie extensive business known as the New Zealand Clothing Factory, which has branches throughout New Zealand. He also took a leading part in the establishment of another important concern, tlio wellknown D.1.C., which has its headquarters in Dunedin, and branches in Wellington and Christchurch, and of which he was the chairman. Mr Hallenstein and his brothers were connected with numerous commercial enterprises. Deceased, who was about seventy years of age, was for some years German Consul at Dunedin-
