AT THE NEW PLYMOUTH EXHIBITION.

MESSRS SMART BROS

Smart Bros., of Stratford, New Plymouth and Inglewood, are to be congratulated on the excellent display they made. Their three exhibits were amongst the most prominent in the exhibition. In dairy machinery and utensils they showed a great variety of goods of their own manufacture, and the excellence of the workmanship was quite up to the high standard always aimed at by this well-known firm. In electro goods a beautiful display was made, and it was very artistically arranged. Messrs Stuart and Fenn, for whom Messrs Smart Bros, are local agents, supplied the dynamo and a large portion of the lamps, novelties, etc. The whole exhibit was fitted up by Messrs Smart Bros.’ electrician, Mr P. Wallace, and he deserves great credit for the perfect way he has done his work, as well as for the artistic grouping of the whole exhibit. A splendid electric radiator occupied the corner position, which, besides being most ornamental, radiates a heat which surprises and pleases visitors. The lamps were in great variety and beauty. A fine display of electric bells was made,

and novelties, such as electric irons, curling tongs, heatei's, torches, soldering iron, etc., much to numerous to detail. The whole display was right up to date and highly creditable to the firm. Messrs Smart Bros.’ awards were: — Three gold medals, one silver medal, three special prizes, nine first prizes, three second prizes. MESRS H. OSCAR HEWETT AND CO., LTD. Perhaps one of the most attractive and popular stalls in the exhibition was that of this company, whose comprehensive exhibit at the entrance to the Maori village was the rendezvous for some thousands of visitors during the exhibition. Here were shown the famous “Wertheim” sewing machines, whose name is a household word throughout Australia and New Zealand. In addition, Messrs' Hewett and Co., Ltd., also showed some of the latest designs in the new rotary Wheeler and Wilson machines, both for family ancl factory work. These famous makers are to-day leading the world in factory machines. Pearson and Reunion's latest Saddlery, machines, and a collection of saddlers machine tools were also l shown, and for which company Messrs Hewett and Co., Ltd., are the New Zealand agents, as they are also for knitting machines of several makers, which now play such an important part in our colonial industry. Also l , Oliver typewriters, claimed to le the latest and most improved vis.-ble typewriter. The “Sellers” and “Rapid” washing machines, both lever and rotary, were all shown in this stand. Messrs H. Oscar Hewett and Co., Ltd., whose head office is at Wellington, have branches and agencies throughout the colony.

THE KITSON LIGHT SYNDICATE. The three Kitson Lamps now being: exhibited by the New Zealand Kitson Patent and General Light Co., Ltd., at the New Plymouth ESxhibition, are all attracting a great deal of attention. One, a street lamp, is situated in the centre of New Zealand Avenue, another of the self-contained type, is suspended from a cross beam. The third, a contractor’s lamp, at the request of the committee, supplies the light for the bandstand. At a lighting competition held on Friday, 30th December, at which coal gas and electric light were represented, a special diploma'for general excellence was awarded to the above Company. The Elxhibition Committee are much impressed with the light, and regret they did not enter into some arrangement with the Company to undertake the whole of the lighting. At the request of the Harbour Board, a lame has been erected on the breakwater. This, it is understood. is preliminary to the general adoption of the Kitson Light by that body. The gas consumed in these lamps is obtained from kerosene under high pressure, and is the nearest approach to sun light of any known illuminant.
