BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
A NEW ZEALAND TEACHER INTERVIEWED.
SYDNEY, January 6. Mr Bevan-Brown, headmaster of the Christchurch High School, in the course of an interview, stated that New South Wales was often quoted by New Zealanders to show what could be done in the direction of Bible teaching in public schools without the creation of a bitterness of feeling. The present New Zealand system he described as unworkable unless under very favourable circumstances.
What recent sentiment favours, Mr Bevan-Brown stated, is something national that will reach the farthermost country districts. The promoters of the extension of religious instruction aim to make it an ordinary class lesson, wherein particular dogmas would be excluded and the teaching of the elementary principles: common to all Christian codes would be assured.
