On the authority of a paragraph in the "Liverpool Weekly Mercury,” of November sth, it Avas stated in “The Australas:an” of last week that the AtwellMcKelvie quick-time match —(Mr Atwell prefers the phrase “match of one-hour games”)—had been abandoned at the last moment. The statement Avas incorrect. The “Daily News” of a subsequent date announced that play in the match Avas to be begun on Saturday, November 12th, with the probability of being finished by the following Wednesday evening. The “Daily NeAvs” also gave the folloAving as a game recently Avon hy Mr McKelvie from “a friend Avho has figured prominently in first-class play for the last 20 years.” (“The Doctor.”) Black —The Friend. And Mr McKelvie won. Play in the A'twell-McKelvie match began on Saturday, November 12th, and ended on Tuesday, November 15th. The gcore standing at 14 wins each, and 10

draws, it was agreed that play should cease; that the match should be declared drawn, and that another match, on similar conditions, should be arranged for a later date. NOTES. The long-protracted Jordan-Atwell match, for the championship of Lond.on, ended with the 16th game in favour or Mr Jordan. His winning score was 2 wins, 13 draws, to 1 win 13 draws. The "Pittsburgh Despatch” announces that a tourney for the championship of Canada is shortly to be held at Quebec. Ten players have entered, and there are to be three prizes’—the first, of 50d01., together with the the second, of 25d01.; and the third, of lodol. At the annual meeting of the English Draughts Associa.fion, Mr J. A. Xear proposed that the association time-limit should be fixed at 15 moves per halfhour; and Mr F. Dunne. suggested the retention of the present twenty-move-per-hour rate of play, but with the proviso that in case of the non-determinar tion of the winner of a. round at the end of the last of the stipulated number of games any further play that might be necessary should be at the proposed faster time-limit. Mr Kearns proposal and Mr Dunne’s suggestion were referred to the executive, with instructions to submit a resolution for consideration at the next annual meeting of the association.
