The Marine Underwriters’ Association of Victoria have published a return showing the number of vessels totally lost in the trade to and from Australasia, United Kingdom. Continent of Europe, and America for the year 1903. During that period 355 steamer voyages were made to Australasia, and one steamer was totaliy lost; 309 steamer voyages were made from. Australasia, and there were no total losses. The return for sailing vessels shows a larger percentage of total losses. There were 42S vessels pound inwards, comprising 181 to New South Wales. 127 to Victoria, 58 to South Australia. 24 to Queensland, 53 to Western Australia, 21 to Tasmania, and 34 to New Zealand. Of this number 6 were totally lest, 1 each to New South Wales and South Australia, and 2 each to Western Australia and New Zealand. Of the 513 sailing vessels outward bound, 399 were from New South Wales, 18 from Victoria, 24 from South Australia. 2 from Queensland, 31 from Western Australia, 9 from Tasmania, and 30 from New Zealand. There were 19 total losses—9 from New South wales and 1 from South Australia.

According to advices received from. Tasmania recently, the Union Company’s well-known 'steamer Makinapua had a sensational experience during the heavy gales lately. Upon her arrival at Strahan the master reported that he had twice during the trip run into Port Davey for shelter. Mountainous seas were running, and, to the dismay of all on board, the water found its way into the engine-room. A huge sea which broke over the vessel reduced one of the boats to atoms.

The British barque Dumfriesshire, a recent visitor to Wellington, which came to grief off the coast of New. Caledonia at the beginning of last month arrived in Sydney last iveek, to be docked for examination, and, if necessary, repairs. The mishap to the vessel furnishes material for one of the most remarkable marine stories ou record. It appears that the Dumfriesshire, while on her way from New Zealand to the port of Nekoue, in New Caledonia, to load a cargo of ore for the Continent, struck one of the numerous submerged reefs which abound on that dangerous coast. The ship was under full sail at the time, and the position was regarded by Captain Taylor and his crew as such a serious one that it wa3 resolved to abandon the vessel before she sank. The following morning the Dumfriesshire had completely disappeared from view, and the conclusion was at once arrived at; that the vessel had foundered during the course of the night. Subsequently the castaways were rescued by a steamer, the master of which was informed that the Dumfriesshire had gone down. Having no cause to doubt the total loss of the vessel, the steamer steered a course for Noumea. What actually occurred, however, was that the Dumfriesshire, without any assistance beyond that afforded by the rising tide, floated off the reef upon which she had stranded, and instead of foundering, gracefully sailed away round the island for a distance of 25 to 30 miles, eventually coming to a safe anchorage near Pourn, where she was se>cured by a couple of lucky settlers. The vessel, it was found from a hurried examination, had escaped serious damage, and the voyage to Sydney was an uneventful one.

.The '‘Sydney Morning Herald’s" correspondent writes from Fiji:—ll.M.S. Torch has visited Tonga and is now lying in the harbour with H.M.S. Mutine. The latter arrived from New Hebrides on August 7th, with Captain Rason, the British Resident Commissioner, on board. The flagship arrived early on August 9th, and coaled next day. A record was set up for Suva. The ship took in 888 tons in 10 hours, but the best hour’s work was 129 tons. The Union S.S. Company of N.Z. supplied the coal from the Wanaka and two hulks. The long overdue coolie ship Bms arrived on July 30th, 121 days out from Calcutta. ‘The longest previous voyage was 93 days, and previous to that 87 days. Captain Littledale explained that light winds had prevailed in the Bay of Bengal, the voyage to the equator taking 55 days in place of about 10, as usual. The Pericles came from Calcutta to Suva in 53 days. Thei;e were no deaths, on board, but a birth allowed one more to be landed than embarked. The ship sailed again for Calcutta on the 19th August, with 367 return coolies. Dr Woodward, the surgeon superintendent of the bms, was in bad health on arrival, and was taken to the hospital, but he gradually sank and passed away on August 20th. Dr Maguire, one of the local Government staff, proceeded with the ship to Calcutta. The Manuka arrived to time, and sailed for Vancouver with 500 tons of sugar, the first shipment. Unfortunately, through rough weather one lighter intended for the Manuka struck the bank of the channel and sprank a leak. The sugar was badly damaged, incurring a loss of over <£4oo. During the stay of the Manuka in Suva Captain Phillips entertained his Excellency the Administrator and Mrs Major, with most of our leading officials and merchants. The magnificent vessel was greatly admired by all.
