RAPING IN NEW ZEALAND

HAWKE’S BAY RACES.

NAPIER, June 22. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting commenced to-day. The sum of £5388 was invested on the totalisators, as compared with .£4030 for the first day last year. Rhyl won the Trial Steeplechase from end to end. He jumped cleverly, and was never extended. Had he been entered in tho big race to-morrow he would probably. have repeated the performance of his half-sister Ruby, brother Moifaa, and dam Denbigh. Rhyl runs in the interest of G. Pilcher, who raced Scallywag. He beat a pair of cripples in • Sabreur and Towhatu. The Hutt trained Dismal turned over at the sod wall, a solid jump and the biggest of the obstacles. British Navy (Torpedo —Pair Nell) ran well in the Winter Hack Handicap for six furlongs, and may be better suited *«by the shorter distance tomorrow. Ice failed to stay out the, last farlong, and was beaten by Talune after an exciting finish. The Ladies’ Bracelet was one of the best contests ever witnessed for the race. The West Coaster Dick Turpin was ridden by'Dr Paget. y Kaipetipeti was in . front ’ ts the distance where Optimist was called on and won after a close finish. Optimist ran in the nomination of Mrs Rathbone, who won the valuable trophy last year with Apres. Both winners .were ridden by Mr Neagle, one of the best of our gentlemen riders. Mrs Douglas started both Tyrone and Mahitr. The field included Joe Chamberlain, a candidate for New Zealand Cup honours. The Masterton trained horse finished close up to the placed horses. i He was brought out again; in the Corinthian Stakes, but was not fancied. Ho WOii after a punishing finish with Sleepwell (Captain Webb—Leonie). Three of the sis runners for the Hack Hurdles were making their first appearance in public. Osfciak, who has Quietened down considerably, was m front for about a mile and a half, and jumped well. The Stepniak gelding and Noshot made the pace very solid- Warwick jumped well, and run behind this. pan to the bend where la and Ontario, came through and fought out a punishing finish, the having a head the best of it. Ia is a full sister to Materoa, The Shannon, Waitarere and other performers.. She was making her first appearance in a jumping race, and is the first of, the family to he put to the business.. She was only out for educational purposes, and was not backed by the stable, which accounts for the price paid. She is a stable mate of Creusot and Comfort. Valima made a poor show;

running 'in - the rear throughout. Ostiak finished fourth. Levant, who may be seen out to-mor-row, was the only withdrawal from the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles. Roller and Defoe acted as' pacemakers. When the former dropped back Aroha joined Defoe. Creusot challenged at the bend, but pan in on to Aroha. and having to be straightened up again suffered defeat by a neck. India was fourth. A. Hall was suffering from sciatica, and was unable to ride The Guessei*. His brother took the mount. The Enchanter gelding was never prominent. The sod wall brought down two of the runners in the Hunters’ Steeplechase. Nadador, who carried Sir William Russell’s colours, settled the others without difficulty. The win was received with cheers.

NAPIER, June 23

The. Jockey Club was again favoured with glorious weather for its wrnter meetiug. The sum of <£5779 was invested on the totalisator, making £11,147 for the two day si, as compared with <£8045 last year. Results: Stockman (who did not make the jour-, ney from Auckland) was the only withdrawal of eight acceptors for the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase. Towhatu made a much better display than in the Trial Steeplechase on the previous day. He .carted his field along for over two miles, and had Victory alongside him. These two were allowed to get a great break on the field. Papatu, who was a good favourite, .made a big effort to catch' the leaders in the last round. He made up his ground splendidly, and caught Victory at the last fence, but the latter had the most left in him, and won by a bare half-length. Eclair was half-a-dozen lengths away third, just clear of •Towhatu. Mourner ran off at the sod wall the second time round, and Evening came to grief at that obstacle the last time round. Rapanui was beaten off after going two miles and finished some~ distance behind the placed horses: Victory was bred by the Hon Ji D. jOrmoiid, and picked up ‘by bis present owner at that gentleman’s sale at Palmerston North a year ago for 40gs. He has turned out a cheap-purchase for the Ashburton sportsman. He' won the Enfield Steeplechase at Riccarton the first time he carried the red, white and blue jacket. He also scored at Timaru. Koliunui was very lucky to get the Final Steeplechase at Wanganui, in which event Victory slipped and came to grief. Sam Brown is somewhat fortunate at Hastings. . He won the Trial . Steeplechase and Hurdles last winter with Hurricane. In the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase Vagrant topplecl over at the sod wall. Rhyl and Sabreur ran together most of the way. The former gained ground at the jumps, which Sabreur made up on the flat. They landed over the last fence together, Sabreur winning by a couple of lengths. Gun Metal was beaten off. The pace in the Hurdles was. not so solid as on the previous day. Defoe, Aroha and Midia ran together for a mile and a quarter, but the latter dropped back beaten at the bend, and came to grief three hurdles from heme. She, however, continued in the race, and passed the post first. W. Price escaped unhurt. Creusot had Aroha’si measure two furlongs from home, and won easily. Moura was made a big pot for the June Handicap, but, although he got a good position at the start, he failed to stay six furlongs. Ice, who ran prominently the previous day, beat the Martinboroughtrained Rungarawa by half a length. Rungarawa was brought out again in the Final Handicap, and ran a good second to the Gisborne-owned Paria., who wasi prominent throughout. This was Paria’g only apearancs at the meeting. Sleepwell (P. Neagle’s mount) was most fancied for the Ladies’ Necklace. Bandmaster ran a good race. ~ He was in the front from end to end, and beat the favourite after an interesting race. - Hawke’s Buy Steeplechase, about three miles. The following are the winners of this event:—
