WAIPUKURAU.

The Waipukurau Road Board met last Tuesday, all the members being present, including Mr.P. Gow (chairman). A letter irom Mr L. C. Ratlibone as to the road leading to his Turere property being made, was read, and the Board decided that nothing could bo done at present. The striking of a rate.of |d (three farthings) in the £ was confirmed. A number of visitors and settlers were in town last Tuesday, it being the fortnightly sale day. Three firms held sales, viz., Williams and Kettle, Ltd., N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., and the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association, Ltd. A much required extension of the. saloyards is in contemplation. One of the leading banks is being petitioned to open # a branch to enable clients to transact business daily. At present station-owners, farmers and business men nave to go to Waipawa periodically to do their banking business, as che agency of the Bank of New Zealand is only open on Tuesdays and Fridays of each week. Th(e football match. Ormondville v. Waipukurau, played at Ormondville on Wednesday last, resulted in a win for Waipukurau by eleven points to four. In the first spell A. Drower scored a try for Waipukurau. In the second half fcvugden converted a mark obtained by Hutton for Ormondville, and White scored two tries for the winners, one of which was converted by Sharpin. The ground was very 'sloppy and rendered the play uncertain in its progress.
A meeting of the School Committee was held last Wednesday night, Mr P. Gow presiding. The headmasters’ report was received. It was decided to recommend th&t the school holidays be postponed until after the annual examination, due in August. Miss A. Thoudy was appointed caretaker of the school, and the Committee expressed regret at the death of the late caretaker. Mrs Thoudy. The recommendations of the master’s report are to be given effect to. June 18 th.
