ARGYLE
(From an Occasional Correspondent.)
A number of Argyle settlers met at T'ikokino on the 7th mst., and passed a vote of thanks to Mr A. E. Jull, a member of the Harbour Board, and Chairman of the Waipawa County Council, for his kind efforts in the matter of interviewing and obtaining an explanation from the Harbour Bjard as to the demand for unpaid! rates. The explanation was to the effect that an error had (Occurred in the Harbour Board's clerical department in issuing demands for rates for 1603, and further that the demand would not be enforced. The Harbour Board valuations of some of the Argyle properties differ from those made by the Government iu an extraordinary measure. In some instances the sum is in the neighbourhood of three figures. It is considered expedient that the settlers who are overvalued should endeavour to have their values adjusted by, the Harbour Board before rates are paid, and that the matter should receive immediate attention. Hares are plentiful, and are proving very destructive to young trees. In some plantations the trees have been nipped off within a few inches of the soil, and in some cases .where new trees have replaced those destroyed the same destruction ensued. It is feared that, owing to these depredations, there will be a difficultv in.
rearing permanent shelter plantations to protect against the keen westerly winds blowing off the snow-clad Ituahin.es.
