In connection with the approaching visit of M. Paderewski to Australia and New Zealand, it-is a singular coincidence that July 9th, when he is to begin his opening concert in Melbourne, is the date of the 'engagement for an Australian tour which thirteen years ago he signed with Mr Iv. S. Smythe. The agreement was duly stamped at Somerset House; but when the time for its fulfilment arrived the celebrated pianist was too ill to travel, and it was subsequently cancelled, Mr Smythe being paid money out of pocket. Meantime, however,- the much-travelled manager had seduously fulfilled that clause of the contract under which he undertook to use every possible means to make the name of Paderewski known throughout Australia New Zealand and Tasmania. During the tour, as arranged by Mr Smythe, M. Paderewski was to be assisted by M. Goeski. a brilliant Polish violinist, and Mr George Clutsam, a native of Dunedin, was to be the accompanist.
