Mr George Fisher, M.H.R. for Wellington, has been released from the Waitati Home (says a Dunedin Press Association telegram), on a certificate signed jy two medical -men. The order was made by Mr C. C. Graham, S.M.

The election of five members of the Johnsonville Town Board, held last Saturday, resulted in the return of Messrs F. T. Moore, J. J. Eason, A. W. Chapman, G. Lambert and G. E. Manson. Messrs J. Ricketts and M. Atkinson were the unsuccessful candidates.

The annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute was held on Monday. The following were elected a committee for the ensuing year :—Messrs 0. Batten, W. Thomson, J. Hanning, E. J. Ingleton, A. E. Duncan, R. Hope, G. N. vVallace and I. H. B. Jeffares (secretary). Sir Joseph Ward, in impressing upon the deputation of railway men that waited upon him on Monday the large number of applications made for employment in the service, stated that before he had left liis private house in the morning, lie had received eighty letters asking for positions from all over the colony.

An election of five members of the Petone Borough Council took place on Monday. Those elected are Messrs John Wakeham (450 votes), William Kidd Aib), , W. B. Nicholson (363), J. F. Bowles (350), and W. Hill (328). The other candidates ; were—'Mrs " Louisa Raby (308), Messrs J. L. Morrison (218), G. Jones (210) and E. W. Woodhouse .05).

T3ie Victoria College Debating Society at its last meeting discussed the question of the introduction of Chinese into the Transvaal, and, on a division, declared against it. The speakers were ess.rs Delamare. Kirkcaldie, Graham, Bretherton, Tudhope, T'oogood and Quartley. Messrs Richmond, Quartley, Tbogood and Johnstone were elected to (•present the society in a, debate with ;a socialist party.
