Lady Helen, by Bill —Darkie. the wairarapa coursing CLUB’S CUP MEETING. . (By “Go-Bye.”) The Wairarapa C.C. opened their 1904 season on the 24th ult., and concluded it on the 27th. The bill-of-fare was the Wairarapa Cup and a couple of Supplementary Stakes. The Cup had attracted 69 nominations, and 57 made the final payment. Amongst the dogs competing were Messrs Kelly Bros.’s (Victoria) Narrow Escape (Young Hey field—Federation) and The Hermit (Goldsmith—Polonaise), Mr J. Amoretti’s bk and w d The Vicar of Wakefield (Goldsmith —The Witch), Messrs Annand and Baker’s Jewel Gun (Maxim—Star Jewel), and several other good performers this season. The weather during the three days was simply wretched, which accounted for the small attendance of the public. Nevertheless, £57 was taken at the gates during the meeting. Amongst the visitors present were Mr P. F. Kelly (Victoria), Mr E. Hepple (Sydney), Mr R. Wright (Sydney), Mr H. W. Davies, hon. sec, N.Z.C.A., Mr J. Pick (Leeston), Mr Baker (Waipawa), Mr Martin Taylor (Auckland) and a goodly number of coursing enthusiasts from Wellington. The committee of whom Mr M. C. O’Connell is president and Mr F. Dupre hon. sec., made things very pleasant for the visitors, despite the weather, and there is no denying that from a coursing point- of view the meeting was excellently managed and was a huge success. The hares ran exceedingly well, and were a credit to the Very Rev. Dean McKenna, hon. treasurer of the club, under whose direction they were trained to the escapes. Never since the revival of coursing in this colony have hares been seen like them. They seemed to go out of the boxes like steam engines, and in many cases the dogs failed to reach them ere they escaped. Altogether at the meeting there Avere 107 trials and only 17 kills The mortality would have been smaller, only some of the dogs ran terribly cunning, their only aim being to dash in for the kill. Several of the dogs engaged had accidents at the meeting, for which there is no accounting, as the ground was very soft. NarroAv Escape lost three naiis. The Hermit tAvo nails, Motorist one nail, and' several others had their toes knocked up. Narrow' Escape, the winner of the Cup, is a f and w b, bred by Messrs Kelly Bros., of Victoria. She js very fast and clever, and the Avin Avas very popular. She won all her courses very easily and was only led once by JeAvel Gun in .the fourth ties, who reach, ed. the game tAvo lengths in front of the bitch, but the dog once more let his owners doAvn by turning rogue, as once the hitch got in he never tried, and she easily beat him in a good trial. Amongst others, Narrow Escape met Rowlock, who got the flag against her in Duner din and she easily heat him. The run-ner-up, Emerald (Rory O’More—Shy rose) is owned by Mr T. Cleary, of Napier and he Avas neA r er led ,until the final, when NarroAv Escape led and beat him, the scores being 9 to 12., The winner started favourite for the stake, the best price obtainable at the draw being 5 to 1 against. Mr J. Mitchell, of Oamaru. officiated as judge from the elevated stand, and bis decisions Avere A r ery Avell received. He held a very unenviable position in the stand during the three hours, owing to the rain, some of the cours&s being run in blinding shoivers. Mr M. Connelly, of Oamaru, had charge of the slipping, and fulfilled the position in his usual careful stylo, getting the dogs aAvay splendidly and giving a uniform slip. The settling Avas held in the Central Hotel on Friday evening, about 60 persons Avere present. The President, Mr' M. O. O’Connell, presided and Mr P. Kelly (Melbourne) was vice-chairman. After the prize money and medals had been distributed, and the loyal toast honoured, Mr 0. A. Pownall proposed “The Visitors,” to whom, he thought, the success of the meeting Avas due. Messrs Heppell (Sydney), P. Kelly (Melbourne) and Pick, responded. The “Wairarapa Coursing Club” Ava-s proposed by Mr H. Davies, Avho said the fact that, the visitors came again to patronise the meeting was ample evidence that the club Avas . going to succeed. Rev Dean McKenna, in responding, said that as treasurer of the club he had ahva-ys taken an interest in the institution, and Ava-s pleased to see it making such Avonderful progress. Mr F. Hill proposed “The.NeAv Zealand Coursing Associatoin,” and said that, although the Association had not been formed very long, they had done a great deal of good, and'their aim right through Avas for the furthering of the interests of the sport. Mr Davies suitably responded. Mr P. Kelly (Melbourne) proposed “The President and Officials of the Wairarapa Coursing Club.” He had never met a more courteous lot of officials anywhere, and hoped that when lie again visited Masterton the Club would have an even more successful meeting. The President, in responding, said he had been for a number of years a folloAver of the sport, and hoped to see the Club one of the best in New Zealand some day. It Avas a pleasure to assist in any Avay, and lie trusted that later on the prize-money Avould be bigger, and that visitors would come from even further afield. Mr PoAvnall replied on behalf of the officials. “Judges and ‘Slippers,’ ” Avas proposed by Mr T. Dwyer, and responded to by Messrs John Mitchell and M. Connolley (both of Oamaru). During the evening songs were rendered by Messrs FaAvcett, Price, T. Thompson, M. Taylor, and C. Taylor, and recitations by Messrs Fawcett and Amoritti. Mr Martin Taylor disposed of the whole of his team at the Wairarapa Coursing C-luh’s Cup Meeting. The following are the sales:—Brd d Monarch (Emperor—Frisca Lass) Mr W. J. Williams, £10; brd b p Grace Hawthorne (Butcher Boy—Lady Daslvwood) Mr J. Moore, £7 10s; r d Field Marshall (Wel-lington—Lavender-Water), £6; brd b Charming May (Stormfiend Bessie Macarthy) Mr Goddard, £2. Sweet Stream one of the dividers at Leeston was purchased for £2 10s after the Oamaru meeting in April by Mr G. Hastie. The brd son of Soda Water — Spruce II proved a good investment for his neiv oAvner. Mr P. F. Kelly returned to NeAv South Wales by the Victoria on Saturday last. It Avas his intention to_ remain in NeAv Zealand for the Wellington meeting, but " OAving to Narrow Escape and The Hermit being incapacitated from running, having been hurt at the Wairarapa meeting he decided to return to his home. The Wairarapa O. C. have fined P. Brierly, OAvner of Master Rosebery £5 for unbecoming behaviour towards the judge at their Cup Meeting. Hie SteAvards of the Club also held an inquiry into the running of Helensbrook in the first round of the Consolation Stake when the bitch was easily beaten by Wallace. The President informed Mr McGreevy that the circumstances were A r ery suspicious but OAving to the absence of a veterinary surgeon lie would be given tlie benefit of the doubt. The Wairarapa officials are going in for the game on the true lines and it is to bo hoped that these cases Avill prove a warning to others. Mr H. W. Davies has imported from Victoria, the stud Greyhound Goldbeater by Goldsmith —Rosewood. I had i\ look at him last week and he looks an ideal stud dog. Black in colour. I should say he is about 741bs Aveight, and he should prove a success at the stud.
