NEW PLYMOUTH

(From Our Own Correspondent). In common with other parts of New Zealand we have experienced a very wet week but thanks to the natural drainage we enjoy we have been spar ti losses by floods. All the rivers and creeks were in fresh, but no serious damage is reported. Some seven inches of rain fell, but the many waterways were able to carry such a large volume to sea without causing any appreciable damage to settlers. Mr J. Mackenzie, who has been promoted to the position of Commissioner of Grown Lands at Auckland, left here on Thursday night to take np his new jiost. Since he was appointed to the Taranaki district Mr Mackenzie made himself thoroughly acquainted with the backblock settlements, and no one knew better than he the many hardships that settlers had to contend against in their primitive surroundings. Mr Langmuir, who was second in command at New Plymouth succeeds Mr Mackenzie as Commissioner for Taranaki. Mr W. T. Jennings. M.H.R., and a writer whose 110 m do plume is *‘Dun boy/’ have been indulging in more newspaper controversy in connection with scenery matters m the Mokau district. It was reported the other day that Mr Jennings was about to purchase the ‘‘lnglewood Record,” but the deal fell through. The (Supreme Court sittings begin here about June 14th. The criminal calendar is not a Tong one, but there are some charges of offences agaiußt females to be investigated, and an interesting divorce case will probably be heard. The boring operations for petroleum at Moiuroa are now in full swing, and a depth of 100 feet was reached for three days’ work. Mr Fair had then to suspend the operations in order to case the bore as sand was coming in and impeding the boring. The directors of tlie Moturoa freezing works have decided to build the new works in brick, and Mr Patton, of Napier (I think), has been instructed to prepare the plans.
