WAITARA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Good weather still prevails up this end of the island, and fanners find out that the milk cows are still yielding a good supply., We are just on the eye of being gazetted a borough. Who will be our first Mayor? Waitara. with a progressive mayor and borougn council will, we hope, be made a more up-to-date and” progressive town and port. The building trade seems to have taken a. sudden start. Mr Newberry is adding a saddler's shop to his business, and Mr W. P. Snell a bootmaker’s .shop. Also there are three dwellings in course of construction, Mr Dooley has just completed renovating and painting his premises the A\ aiV tara Hotel, one of the oldest established landmarks in Waitara. The contract for completing the metalling of Wruti road has just been completed, and will prove a boon to settlers and travellers. Mr Cowan, accompanied by Mr AY. T. Jennings, M.H.R. for this district, paid a visit to the beautiful Moltau river, and I hear that the result of the trip.will be Mr Donne, head of the Tourist Department, paying the river an early visit nest summer and placing the beauties of. the Mokati river before the tourist world. - Complaints of the inconsistent running of the direct Wellington boat are rife, as cargoes booked one day may not be received for a week. Consignees are often put to inconvenience owing to delays which make the trade so> irregular. The fishing trade here seems to be - turning out very successful, and another : boat is shortly to be constructed locally for the trade.
