Mr 0. C. Kingston, formerly Minister of Customs in the Federal who has been in very bad health for some time past, resumed his seat in tha Australian House of Representatives on the 18th inst., amid cheers and congratulations from all sides of the House. Mr George Knapp, an old resident of the Wairarapa, died at Greytown on Thursday evening at the advanced age of severity-seven years. Deceased came out to the colony in 1840 as a member of the 58th Regiment, and was present at several engagements during the Maori war. He leaves a widow, three sens and one daughter. Mr Frank Simpson, chief draughtsman in the office of the Lands and Survey Department at Napier has been promoted to be Commissioner of _Crowii Lands in Taranaki, to succeed Mr JMackenzie, appointed to Auckland. The position was, as previously stated, offered to Mr J. Langmuir, chief draughtsman at New Plymouth, but he has declined it. Mr Simpson was for some years district surveyor at Whangarei, north of Auckland. He is brother of Mr R. M. Simpson, of Wellington. He will probably be succeeded at Napier by Mr James Hay, District Surveyor. The natives of the Wairarapa district are to hold a farewell meeting -t Papawai on the 9th inst., in connection with Lord Ranfurly’s departure from the colony.
