Of the six Russian thar (a species of long-haired mountain goat) presented to the Tourist Department by the Duke of Bedford,- five arrived in excellent condition by the White Star liner Corinthic last Aveek. The other, during the voyage, manaoed to squeeze through a partiallyopen ‘sliding door in its pen, and jumped into the sea. These animals, the first of their kind to be introduced into Neiv Zealand, are about the same size as an ordinary goat, but have a particularly fine head surmounted with grace-fullv-curved horns. The thar will be placed oh Somes Island for a couple of months, and will then be liberated m the district best suited to their nature —-probably in the vicinity of Mount Cook.
