MANAWATU WINTER SHOW

(From Oui' Oavu Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, Monday. The second annual winter shoAV organised by the Manawatu A. and P. A&sochi-. tion-Avill be a remarkable display. Tho successful inauguration of the fixture, last year resulting in a profit of .£3OO has induced a /much Avider vieAv of its then possibilities, ;.alid this year Avill see to what astonishing extent those possibilities haA © become merged-into solid realities. The AA-o.rkiug machinery section,' comprising refrigerators,.. separators, turbines, gas engines and other requisites to the dairying industry Avill occupy the Avhole of the main exhibition hall, 200 x 60. A length of 160 feet of shafting, together Avith about 50-horse poAver, .wil-1 be required to drive the stationary machinery. The section,-- which avill be one of the most interesting in the Avhole of the exhibition, will be more than double the extent of -last year’s display, and Avill comprise a much more diverse field, of Avorking 'machinery. It is estimated that' the latter, will occupy some 3200 feet of floor- space. ■Next in importance.is the poultry division,.for Avhich a nerv -hall measuring 60 x 100 feet, specially, lighted and \rentilated, lias «sVesii built. Special attention has been giA'en this year in the Avay of. ‘.encouraging exhibits by providing a liberal cash aijd special prizes. Exhibitors Avill be pleased to learn that Avhere . a special prize is donated to any one class the society's special trophy av) L not be withheld. The latter to the A'alue of ,£2 2s will be awarded for Minorcas, Leghorns, -Orpingtons, Wyandottes, game > Wvandottes and similar awards for the most points in-.Lang'shnns, Plymouth Rocks, Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Minorcas, jueg--horns and Andalusians. Guinea trophies will also be. awarded to- Langshans, Plymouth Rocks, Andalusians, Hondans and ducks. The. cash prize for all Avards Avitbout exception range from ss. for', one entry to 18s 6d for ten entries. The North Island £3 3s championships a vill be- awarded to golden Wyandottes and Hambnrgs of any variety but black. It is seldom if ever that such .a liberal prize-list has , been compiled for poultry ' exhibitors in tho colony; and is Avortby of Avid© response from fanciers. Judge for poultrv are Mr J. Rose, of Dunedin, for lieowy breeds and Mr F. Dacre, Christchurch, for light breeds. In connection Avith the poult r->' division, it may be mentioned that something like <£7o Avorth of 'poultry Avas sold at-last year's slioav. Pigeons, and canaries, fox* which tlie judges respectively arc Mr W. B, McKenzie and F. E. Cooper, both of Wellington, are Avell provided for in the- schedule. The attention of homing clubs' members is draAvn to - tho Open Flying .Race from Neiv' Plymouth for which gold and silver piedals are offered. A large and comprehensive section is " provided for under the. horticultural and agricultural products‘division, which Avill be quartered in No. 3 hall, behind the poultry building. Farmers Avill find liberal provision made in the prize list for butter, hams, pork, fruit, vegetables, farm roots, seeds, etc. Of interest among the diverse section of the shoAV, the public schools competition will be an attractive feature. All schools making an exhibit of reasonable merit will receive a sum of ~£2 10s, the tAvo best exhibits receiving Additional prizes of £5 and, <£2 10s respectively. A silver challenge cup, valued at <£lo 10s, will also be presented to the Avinning school. A space some 60 x 40 has been covered in between the machinery and poultry halls, where the half-ton cheese contain- ' ing gold and silver coin to the value of ; £l2 Avill be stationed. A large refreshment room has also been provided * for under the same cover where for a moderate charge afternoon tea and supper Avill be disbursed. It is impossible* in a casual glance over the schedules to gain an adequate conception as to the extent of this year's fixture.
