NOTES. Mr A. J. Heffner, the noted American expert, has commenced a draughts column in the “Boston Herald.” In the great match between the North and South of London, the South won with the scores South, 46; North 43 and 29 drawn. Tiiis is the first occasion that the South has won since the commencement of these contests. It is now nineteen years since the first championship of England took place, when James Smith, of Spiunymoor, won. Mr F. Dunne, of Warrington, is the only, player in this year’s contest that took part in it. The members of the Working Hen's Club opened their draughts season on ; Thursday last. There was a good attendance. The president (Mr E'berlet), in. formally declaring the season open, expressed the hope that the forthcoming tourney would be productive of some good games, and that to a close finish would result, despite the difficulty experienced in handicapping at draughts. He regretted that-the Anglican, societies liad discontinued their draughts contests, but trusted that it would be possible to arrange side matches with other teams during the coming season. (Applause.) Mr Noot, on behalf of the General Committee, said that that body was prepared as in the past to assist the draughts section of the club, and trusted that the club would secure honours at the next Draughts Congress now that the New Zealand Draughts Association had abandoned the two-life system and reverted to a full-round tourney with balloted openings. (Applause.) Thirty players then took part in a sides match, in which Mr Minetti’s team scored thirtytwo games to Mr W. H. Smith’s nineteen, seven games being drawn. At board 1. Mr Minetti played four draws with. Mr W. H. Smith, who was the club’s first champion, and who recently returned from Scotland, receiving a cordial welcome from his former comrades. The following is the score: —* Wine. Draws.. Wins.
