THE NEWTOWN HOTELS
THE corby-macarthy dispute. LICENSE GRANTED BY THE COMMITTEE. The Newtown Licensing Committee met yesterday for the purpose of further considering the case of the Newtown Hotel, postponed from last Tuesday. The members of the committee present were Dr A. McArthur, B.M. (chairman), Rev G. Bond, Messrs R. McKenzie, E. Collie and A. J. Rand. The question of granting a license for the Newtown Hotel had been held over for a week on. the request of Mr Moi ison, counsel for Mr P. Corby, former licensee, and applicant for renewal or license, to see if any arrangement could be come to between bis client and the
landlord of the house, Mr T. G. Macarthy. The dispute between the parties, briefly, was that Mr Corby had obtained a lease, of the hotel for ten years, but the lease was terminated by default after about two years had expired, and as a result of the refusal of the Licensing Committee to grant licenses. The terms for the restoration of the lease Avere not acceptable to Mr Corby, and it was sought to get a. transfer of the license to Mr H. G. Houldsworth. On the opening of the proceedings yesterday, Mr Mori son said his client and Mr Macarthy had been unable to arrange terms, and lie (Mr Mori son) therefore felt that lie had no further locus standi in the matter. r Mr Wylie, who appeared for Messrs Macarthy and Houldsworth, said that no doubt the committee Avould see its
way to renew the license to Air Corby, and to transfer it to Air Houldsworth. No objection having been raised to this course, the committee did as requested without comment. An application for the transfer of the license of the Grosvenor Hotel from R. Barclay to W. Berti was granted.
