The State coal-mines both at Seddonville and at Greymouth are being rapidly developed. The coal is finding favour in all quarters. The hunker coal supplied to the Moura on her last trip was from the Seddonviile mine, and Mr McCallum, the chief engineer of the steamer, speaks highly of its steaming qualities. “No finer,” he says, “ could he bought for the money.” Mr Larsen, of the Westport Harbour Board, says that for smithy purposes it is un* equalled. With regard to the Greymouth State mines product, the completion of the Coal Creek railway, between the mines and Greymouth, will bring this coal into common use. It is expected that trains will bo running on this line in the com so of a few day’s. Lieutenant Bingham, representing the Admiralty, \s at present in Westland, and has ordered two hundred tons as a trial shipment for H’.M.S. Psyche. There are several thousands of tons at bank at the Greymouth State mines ready for export as soon as facilities are available. Persons who have experimented with the coal from the State coal-mines declare that it is admirably suited for all purposes. His Excellency the Governor is to visit' Oneliunga to-day for the purpose of presenting to the Public School Cadets the silver shield recently won by them in the annual shooting competition- The ten boys who topped the score in the North Island will also receive a half-sovereign in cash for their prowess with the rifle. The. shield for the Waimate boys (the winners in the South Island) is still in the hands of the silversmith, but will be forwarded for presentation at an early date.
