THE THEATRE, SYDNEY

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY. May 11, Talking about gaiety reminds me th.it i lie theatrical event ol the week has been the arrival of Mr Williamson’s new Gaiety Company. At least, it is billed a Gaiety Company, but. as a matter of fact, Miss Maude Hobson, who is an old and esteemed acquaintance of Australian playgoers, is the only member of the company who comes from the famous Gaiety Theatre in the Strand. Mr G. P. Huntley, the principal comedian, has’ lately been playing in the Prince of Wales Theatre, London, and is an established London .favourite.

I happened to meet the members of the new organisation as, they spent a day in Sydney before going on to Melbourne, where they open to-night in “Three Little Maids.” In addition to Mr Huntley, the management have a strong < card in Mr Maurice Farkoa, a perfectly delightful Frenchman, who will certainly become a great favourite. He is the principal vocalist of the company, and. with an attractive presence, a charming manner and a light tenor voice, is well equipped for comedy lovemaking. He told me, by the way, that he met our late visitor, Miss Nance O’Neill, at Boston, where she was doing really well, and drawing, large houses in Camille. But she had failed absolutely in New York. Perhaps that was one of the reasons why they liked her in Boston. Camille was certainly one of her best parts in Australia. The dress circle price for this new Gaiety Com-, pany has gone up to 6s, so people will expect something out of the ordinary. The financial depression in Australia will have to drop to positive prostration before avo shall cease to be able to support an occasional visit of a Gaiety Company.
