"Poultry Keeper”.—Best laying hens are among Imperials, Silver Wyandottes, Blade Orpingtons, White Leghorns, Birrilees, Anconas, and Andalusians. In point, however, of weight of eggs, Andalusians, White Orpingtons, and White Leghorns, Minorcas, etc., take strong leads. Last year, in New South Wales, in a laying competition, conducted by the Hawkesbury Agricultural College, N.S.W., under • the direction of the State Poultry Expert, Andalusians - ’ weighed 80ozs to the dozen; White Orpingtons’ and White Leghorns’, 28; Minorcas’, 27; Anconas\ 28i; and so on. In the matter of pure-bred poultry, j.t might be added that three years ago Mr Verry purchased in England on behalf of tlie xsew Zealand Government, Minorcas, Brown Leghorns, Golden and Silver Wyandottes, H cardans, Plymouth Bocks, and Buff and Black Orpingtons, that the birds are a splendid lot, and a great acquisition to th? colony. The aim of the Government is to foster the poultry industry, and it has depots at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, and from there poultry-breeders may not only obtain every information, but may also purchase “settings” of any breed of fowl required.
