WAITARA
(From Our Own Correspondent.) At present we are enjoying a three weeks’ spell of fine weather, and yet one growls at having no water for tank supply. Great, regret is expressed at the loss: by fire of the Moturoa Cool Storage Works, New Plymouth here and elsewhere in Taranaki. However, we can. find accommodation no doubt at our local freezing works, and we see no reason whatever why butter cannot be shipped direct to the Home boat as beef and mutton is done at present. The s.s. Wakanui completed her loading on Wednesday, 11th, and sailed the same night for Picton, her last port of call prior to sailing direct to England. The Freezing Works Company, is sending two more shipments of beet and mutton which will keep the works “’Ssfw. MatThe J ws' y eldest daughter of Mr R. Dent officiatm Efforts are being made by the Waitara Harbour Board to obtain control of South Spit, which is at present under the control of New Plymouth Harbour Board. It is to be hoped that body will place no obstacle m the way of Waitara acquiring it. Its only use outside of Waitara will be in the event of the iron sand industry springing into sudden life, when a few tons of black sand may become useful. congratulate the Department on its promptitude. Mr O. Caldwell is building, another story to his shop which will prove when finished quite an up-to-date business, and a credit to Waitara. There is quite a slump in potatoes here this year. There is no outside markets whatever. We are going to have a Caledonian Pipe Band formed ‘of the principal pipers of Taranaki, and arrangements are now being made for procuring costumes, and all necessary outfits..
