FEILDING

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Our abattoirs are nearing completion, and the soreness and heartburnings caused oy the late Mayoral election are over and it is to be hoped will soon be forgotten. One of the sights of our little town that creates surprise to ootli men and horses is a powerful traction road engine, delivering five immense waggon loads of grain to a local firm. At its tail is a dwelling on wheels. I need hardly say that all but foot traffic gracefully, like the Russians, beat a retreat when the clatter-cum-snort is heard approaching. Sometime ago I saw a circumstance connected with one of the road engines that ought to be reprobated. A gentleman had succeeded in coaxing a timid horse, lie was driving, co range up alongside of a moving engine, when it was greeted with a volume of olack smoke and a simultaneous hoot. The amiable engine-driver, however, did not succeed in causing an accident. _ Petty larceny at auction sales was for a period looked upon as a necessary evil, but it has been carried to such extremes that careful observation Has now placed the auctioneers and many of the public in possession of the names of certain families that make a business of it. An effort is to be made to introduce the matter to our very excellent S.M., who is said to have a keen appreciation of such jokes. The doctors say there are a great many cases.of mild influenza in the district. Bv-the-bye, according to reported trials in Wellington, what, one doctor says is promptly contradicted by another, so instead of quoting them, I will add that several persons are to my knowledge laid iip with something called la grinpe. In the face of a continuous rise in sawn timber, there are still many dwellings in course of erection. I think m bha end the mills will succeed in stifling that industry.
